Wonderful Wraps Central has a been a buzz with excitement of late! I thought I would use this space to keep our followers ‘in the know’ on all the action. Its been a very eventful month to say the least.

Whilst the who’s who of Fashion were in New York dressing their models and making them strut their stuff down the catwalk, here in the UK we had the biggest night for the British Film industry – and boy did it bring out some stunning styles and creations! Some I feel could definitely translate into ideas for Bridal guests and even the Brides themselves. In fact, the star and co-writer of Bridesmaids did not disappoint. She wore a simple, yet chic gown by Alberta Ferretti that I think would be a good design pick for a summer bridal party!

I also loved the style shown by Jessica Chastain (nominated for her role in The Help), Shailene Woodley (Hot property after her role in The Descendant’s) and the up and coming actress, Holliday Grainger (soon to be seen in the film version of Great Expectations). All 3 dresses were in golden and blush tones which were trending on the red carpet. Any one of these 3 dress styles would be a worthy and a stylish choice for a bride on a warm summer’s day. Floaty and fresh but remaining grown up and glamorous – I am of cause slightly partial to Miss Grainger’s BAFTAS attire as it comes from one of my favourite designers and whom I chose for my own wedding dress choice, Valentino.

I also had a small style gush on the night about Fearne Cotton’s dress choice. I don’t necessarily see this being a bridal possibility (although maybe for an alternative Bride opting for a Vintage twist and colour splash!) The Coral Moschino dress with bow tie belt detail is so delightful and she yet again stood out amongst the crowd. And a huge thumbs up with the old school Hollywood hair do.

I could not leave out one of my favourite trend setting Hollywood starlets, Michelle Williams! I think her simple style again could be replicated as a perfect Bridesmaids design – especially if your theme is black and white. Simple but effortless, the high street choice (bespoke H&M conscious collection) in monochrome would give a 60′s edge to your day! LOVE the hot red lips to complete the look!

Over in LA, The Hollywood Music elite were gearing up for their most prestigious awards ceremony of the year. Clouded by the untimely and tragic death of the great Whitney Houston, the Music masses continued to wow in many of their style offerings. There were some real bloopers, but for bridal ideas and inspiration the few that stood out did so spectacularly!

Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Paris Hilton shone in their floor sweeping gowns. Again, Whites, gold’s and nudes were in abundance and as one of my friends said, she would ‘get married in Paris’s dress!’ It was truly divine and ultra chic and perfect for wedding day gorgeousness. The form fitting Basil Soda dress was simple but embellished with gold detail and moulded belt. I also loved her swept back bun – this again was seen on many of the style fashionistas in Tinsel Town!

All that glitters and sophisticated looks – I think that these designs could give great inspiration for those brides who want to show off their figure and embrace their curves!

Corrine Bailey Rae’s offering was to die for! I could just see this wonderful design on a blushing bride in a nude or blush shade swirling around in an English Country garden ceremony! The knee length Christian Siriano dress was just so playful with its ruffled skirt and sumptuous texture. The platform heals and big, natural hair- do completed this fresh overall look. I think that even in black (if you want to be alternative and really on trend) this dress would be just the ticket for that ‘something different’ bridal style.

Finally, I feel that Adele must get a mention. A BIG one! Not only did she win 6 Grammys and made Great Britain so very proud, she also dazzled in the fashion stakes. Following on from our plus size feature, this ladies is how you do it and do it oh so well! Both the dress she wore on the Red carpet, a Giorgio Armani boat neck gown with three-quarter sleeves, and the gown she donned for her performance were dazzletastic! She was a class act in all senses of the word and her dresses matched her pitch perfect talent. She embraced her curvaceous figure and showed just enough for her to look sexy but elegant.

A week of ‘Fashion Fixes’ for the inner fashionista hidden in us all and what I think gives any bride planning their future big days some super stylish and alternative ideas for their own real ‘stand out’ wedding day sensation!

Don’t let your curves throw you a curveball!

I could talk to you all day about plus size fashion and embracing the fuller figure but I want to focus on beautiful bridal wear today.

There are many more choices available to plus size brides today than there has been in recent years but styles can still be limited and a little tricky to find.

Call around wedding dress shops in your area and see what size they go up to, there are an increasing number who will carry wedding and bridesmaid dresses up to a size 32. Alternatively, if they don’t have dresses in store, they may be able to order a selection in for you.

Do not be embarrassed, it is your special day and you should be able to have the dress you love, not just the one that fits.

There are also a huge number of retailers online who can ship ready made or custom made creations to you, just ensure you’ve had a fitting and have your correct measurements.

I’ve picked 3 key trends that I think are gorgeous for the bigger figure. There aren’t necessarily different trends for the plus size market, it’s more about finding the right style for you & wearing it the right way! Accentuate your assets and work out how to cover up any ‘problem’ areas.

My last pick of today is the mermaid or trumpet style gown. Ask a plus size girl which style she’d avoid and this would probably be it but there is no need to shy away! A fabulous trend for 2012 and something that you maybe wouldn’t have thought of. According to ‘Strut’ Bridal based in Phoenix, Arizona – if you have  a waist, you can rock the mermaid dress. The pictures below are also courtesy of Strut and demonstrate how this dress style can work for us bigger girls! The bubble hem adds a fashionable edge and the deep v neckline also draws the eyes in to all the right places. If you are confident and proud of your curves, this would be a great choice for you.

One way to style your wedding dress is take a step back in time to the style of the roaring ‘20s! This look oozes early American ‘High Society’ at a time where the economy was soaring and people were enjoying prosperity and hedonistic delight! I feel that a perfect way to achieve this look is to pair a ‘sheath’ dress with a dramatic faux fur shawl style wrap that has length and texture. Or, maybe a faux fur bolero style to give more presence and volume to your overall look.

Another style of dress that screams for a wrap embellishment is the ‘Fishtail’ or‘ Trumpet‘ dress. I just love it! It has existed for centuries, especially in the Victorian era but it really skyrocketed in popularity in the early 20’s and is ever more popular today with its throw back of Jazz Age elegance. The design was certainly trending on the Red Carpet at the recent Golden Globe awards amongst many of the Hollywood ‘A’ listers. The dress is flattering to all body shapes. The fitted bodice and nipped-in waist of the garment mixed with the fishtail hem or train offers drama and volume. Pair this with a stole, as shown below, and u get an instant fusion of formal elegance and visual interest.

Faux Fur was shown in abundance at the autumn shows of 2011, and designers were aware enough of the recession to not have gone overboard. But the prevailing dark mood of European romanticism did yield fur trim on everything….  even shoes and cover up‘s! A little fur, worn with restraint, goes a long way to add drama to this season’s full-bodied dresses. The full, ball gown style dates back to the mid 1800’s and really does play with that fairy tale theme. It screams ‘belle of the ball’ and what better way to finish off the romantic tone than to add a loose faux fur open bolero or marabou shrug. Feathers have also been huge in the bridal world of accessorizing and can really capture that ethereal look you maybe after!

With the true full sized mid -Victorian design, I think there is no better way than to add the lightness and texture of feathers to give a less ‘dated’ look. My example is a modern take on the original (A Caroline Herrera ball gown from her 2012 collection), with an A line structure but beautifully enhanced with a delicate, feather encrusted bolero.

And to finish off our little trip through the sumptuous sensation that is known as the wrap in any one of its forms, its only fitting to finish with one of our own creations! Here it is paired with a simple but chic ivory gown. We think you will agree that this best selling bespoke organza cloak makes the dress ‘pop’ with angelical style. This could definitely be the piece de résistance for a picture perfect spring wedding. It’s all about the magic touches and that wonderful wrap that’s right for you!

Well, what a night of pure excitement and Fashion Fabulousness! The 2012 Golden Globes , in my eyes certainly, was one of the most glamorous that I have witnessed. There were more fashion ‘ Oh yes!’ moments than Fashion ‘Oh please no!’ disasters. I did not want to miss a second and at times, did not know who to look at first. It was old Hollywood glamour in abundance. With Wonderful Wraps in mind, I was particularly interested to see how the Red Carpet Ladies were accessorising their Golden Globe night creations. They did not disappoint ….

The most obvious trend seen amongst many of the Hollywood set was wearing blush tones ( in particular ) , nudes and vintage gold. Jessica Biel looked utterly devastating in her strapless number as did Jessica Alba who shone in Gucci. Her dress was strapless and had the most beautiful train detail which for any of you ‘Brides-to-be’ could make the most perfect bridal design. Another huge trend seen to grace the red carpet was the ‘Fish tail’ dress design. Sofia Vergara sizzled in her Vera Wang creation – just perfect for her body shape! Elle McPherson also was exemplary for the most dramatic ‘Flirty’ Fish Tail creation by Zac Posen and Lorraine Schwartz Jewellery. I swear this lady does not age and is the female version of Peter Pan!

I think my favourite overall designer of the night was an international Lebanese designer named Reem Acra. Diane Lane smouldered in her vintage golden look, Julie Bowen looked like a star from the 50’s and Madonna carried off a very dramatic creation that only her ( and maybe Lady Ga Ga!) could! The structure of her dress was full bodied and detailed , metallic’s mixed with ruffled emerald green material that made up the skirt of the dress. Reem Acra has the most fantastic bridal collection and certainly sits well with the products Wonderful Wraps has coming up in it’s Spring/Summer collection.

The Strapless dress was certainly the design feature of choice for the majority of the actresses attending the event. I also noticed that many of the stars embellished their looks by wearing a sparkling head band or hair accessory with a swept back hair do. In fact , my pick for the best dressed of the night , Charlize Theron , wore the most truly dazzling hair bling. She oozed style and confidence in her Dior Couture with Cartier Jewels direct from Geneva. It felt like she was a mix of a Grecian Goddess and pure vintage Dior – I think I actually squealed with delight when she posed for photographers! A sassy, classic, elegant dress worn to perfection by this seductive South African – Bravo from the WW Team!

My No 2 and 3 dress triumph of the night goes to the ever glamorous Angelina Jolie followed by Emma Stone. Two totally different designs but both so wonderfully effective. Angelina was just breath taking in her white satin Atelier Versace Gown . The dress was accessorised with a red sash and blood red lips – one word – stunning! The structure and shape was so on point, strapless, figure hugging and floor length – Ava Gardner would be proud! Emma Stone’s look was simple, ladylike and effortlessly chic. The Lanvin design , in my opinion, had a Matthew Williamson feel about it. Very feminine, floaty and subtle. The purple and fuchsia mix blended to offer a dreamy look and the eagle detail around the waist just added to its personality.

I would give the most daring and bold dress of the night to Piper Perabo as she donned the Red Carpet in a full bodied , fairy tale piece that reminded me of Cinderella going to the ball! I think this dress again could give some good ideas for those upcoming brides who are planning a Fairy tale themed wedding and want that dramatic ‘Wow’ factor appeal!

Worst Dress in my eyes, an easy verdict! Sarah Michelle Geller got it wrong on so many levels. From the dress design ( by Monique Lillie) to the ‘tie dye’ effect (so 80’s) to the hair do – or should I say hair don’t! Very unimpressive!

So dear followers of WW World , I think the Golden Globes 2012 was a true fashion success and will be setting trends for those who have important Events and Weddings ( either the bride herself or if you are attending!) . I have always had a natural eye and passion for fashion since I could choose for myself – although my mother has always been a great advocate for colour co ordination and style – must have come from her days of being a professional Opera singer in Covent Garden and trying to woo the Orchestra and dishy Conductors !! My Background is in Theatre and American Literature followed by a varied career with one of the worlds sexiest brands – Virgin Atlantic! It has been said on many occasions on Sales nights out or by the Team I used to manage at the airport that I am ‘Born of Virgin Blood!’. I suppose you have to be careful how you interpret that statement! I have travelled all over the world and seen fashion from many different perspectives and cultures (eye opening to say the least!). I certainly stand for the Glamour and Charisma that Sir Richard instills in all his employees – its called Virgin Flair – I hope to bring some ‘Wonderful Wraps’ flair in abundance!! I think one of  the last people I helped escort through the Terminal as Manager on duty summed me up completely, ‘ Trilby, You’re the Boss!’ Thank you Mr Matt Damon!

Marriage finally took me overseas and away from my beloved Virgin Team – an Alien in Boston – but now a permanent resident! I think that’s as far as I’ll go as I am so proud to call myself a British citizen and all things British! Other than trying to bring a sense of style to the average Bostonian, I have also taken it upon myself to explain other very important British Traditions like Cream Tea and Yorkshire puddings! One gentleman thought that when one is having a cream tea you just ‘put cream in the tea???’(said in a strong Bwoston accent!). And I had to verify that Yorkshire puddings did indeed originate in Yorkshire but they were certainly not doughnuts! I think they thought you could dip them in your Dunkin’ Doughnuts morning Tea!! Afterall, America does run on Dunkin’!!!

Having quietly been working with Wonderful Wraps for the last 3 months helping with updates on their fantastic Facebook page, it seemed only natural to marry my love of writing and Fashion obsession and have my say on this great space. I see the brand values of Wonderful Wraps not being too far off those of my ex employer :- Innovative,Honest,Fun … Loyal to its followers … certainly a place people love to work and where people love to buy from!!! Repeat business is what makes Wonderful Wraps such a special company for its niche clientele. I definitely want to open the flood gates to my fellow natives of ‘The Land of the Free’ – I may be an Alien In Boston but I certainly know that they already notice my style! I blush every time with strangers compliments!

I will endeavour to focus heavily on trends from the high street,cat walks, celebrity events and the streets of Boston Itself! Watch this space for my Fashion Update Fridays, as from the beginning of March, where I will be capturing peoples fashion ensembles from the streets and reporting back to you! I will aim to highlight some of my favourite designers .. Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs and Valentino to name but a few and in that order!I just cant wait to give my critical opinion on film premier fashion and high profile wedding attire. I think a lot of these collections and creations could do well to add and embellish from the Wonderful Wraps extensive range of luxurious faux fur shrugs and vintage accessories - something I intend to elaborate on from the other side of the pond!

And finally on this freezing Friday!!  Something for the Lady to warm your cockles!!     Ryan Gosling may have not been nominated for sexiest man of the year – pipped by Bradley Cooper – but he is the first man to be nominated in the Golden Globe categories for drama and comedy – and if you haven’t seen Crazy Stupid Love its a MUST for your Christmas list!  Not only is Ryan sizzling hot he also has fantastic style and always looks like he has just stepped off a page from GQ!   Its Christmas , a time for giving – so ladies I give you Mr Reynolds – Wrapped up!!!

Even Dragons’ Den judge Deborah Meaden is championing the Local British Business … “The kind of businesses who are creating jobs, invigorating local … trade press and on Twitter with Deborah Meaden’s # buyBritishhelpjobs hashtag on Twitter… again another major lady standing strong for us British…..I salute all these amazing ladies and am so chuffing proud to be one of them.  We are still so proud that 95% of our stock at WW is designed and manufactured here in the UK…(our faux fur trimmed cloaks, faux fur wraps, stoles and boleros, marabou stoles and shrugs….) there for keeping all our wonderful Britain’s in jobs and also providing an exception quality and we also can keep our head high by also  giving an exception service, as we are always totally in control of the work being  done for us…

Following on from the vintage passion and mt love for the Lace trend, I am just in love with the Wedding dress and Mother of the bride dress combo designed by Lela Rose!  Susan Sarandons daughter commissioned Lela to create both dresses and it incorporates our love of lace and a vintage inspired feel!   The added WOW factor – Lela Rose emroidered the brides wedding date in the lining of the dress .. in blue!     Now theres another take on ‘something blue’ for you Brides To Be out there!   Classic with a secret twist – we like it ..alot!
